If your sound device worked fine in 2000, then it must be one of three things;ensure the sound device is enabled in theensure there are no yellow exclamation marks for the sound device in Device Managerensure you have the proper drivers for your O/S, make and model of your machineDownload, install, and run on this machine. (Clean FreeWare) Once it's finished loading and running, look under Multimedia, or, under Multimedia, PCI / PnP Audio. This will tell you what sound devices you have available on your system. Post that information. Also post what is listed for your Motherboard and Chipset. Hello Dan,Ok I installed it anyway - Blue screened the machine.

But on reboot it came up Ok.I now see the Realtek as the audio driver, but still no sound. Running the AVRack says there is no sound hardware. My gut feeling is it relates to the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator not being recognized. Why is the puzzle.I have reinstalled that and it seems to go well. But it is not loading on boot. I suspect there is some conflict somewhere and something is blocking this from running. Is theer a way that you know of to list and compare these system devices to see if something is running on the same whatever to cause a conflict?thanks for your ongoing help.Garth. ' Thanks, just before I push the button this, what does it do exactly. I don't really like running things without knowing roughly why or what to expect'When installing a driver 'package', all it does is place the new driver files in C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 (and other applicable locations if required, ie; 16 bit drivers etc), and put the associated drivername.inf in C:/WINDOWS/INF directories.

The 'drivername'.inf file contains the filenames and locations of the 'new' files so on a restart, windows looks for the.inf file, gets the required information, locates and loads the driver files. If a driver doesn't work, you simply 'Roll-Back' the drivers to the previous ones. You're left with a few files on your system, but that's about all. Now, since you're getting blue screens every time you update your (sound) drivers, something else is wrong (as you've seen/found with this 'Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator').If you would, run Everest. Once it's finished loading and running, click on the Report Wizard in the Menu Bar.
